Benny Greb Byzance Vintage Sand Series cymbals are like no other. Its unusual sandblasted surface gives it a soft feel and a distinct matte finish. Its low, dark and somewhat dry washy sound isn’t too soft or loud. With its great stick definition and short sustain, you can dig into Byzance Vintage for total control at all times. It’s a sound that fits into any music that isn’t in the upper decibel levels.
Meinl artist Benny Greb has worked tirelessly with Meinl to achieve this particular sound. It all started with the 14" Sand Hi-Hats and 20" Sand Ride. Immediately these cymbals caught the eyes and attention of may drummers because it was a unique sounding cymbal. Now there is a whole series to be had.
The 14" Vintage Sand Hi-Hats have a sandblasted surface, various hammering techniques, and noticeable weight difference between the top and bottom cymbals combine to create an unmistakably crispy and articulate sound. The crashes come in 18" thin and medium, yet both have their unique characteristics. An explosive yet buttery sounding cymbal that has a trashy dark tone but is smooth to the ears. It's older siblings come in 20" and 22" sizes that are just as explosive and trashy on the lower frequency end. These crashes have an amazing was with short sustain. The Sand Series Rides come in a 20" and 22" with a sandblasted top combined with the partially lathed bottom produce an outstanding dry and fast stick sound with a very quick decay. The bell has a clear, bright and articulate voice. The 22” Sand Crash-Ride is a very unique cymbal; the combination of the unique hammering patterns, the sandblasted surface, and the lightweight creates a roaring sound with lots of low end. Three rivets round out that special cymbal with an overall dark, earthy and almost mysterious sonic character.
No doubt these cymbals are probably one of my favourite series to play, not only because they were inspired by Benny Greb but they do sound amazing in person! They are very versatile cymbals that can be used playing jazz, funk, fusion and even rock! I'm sure there is at least one of these cymbals in this series that will find it's way on your kit.
